He made significant contributions to urban studies and urban planning in Australia as the Chair of Town and Regional Planning at the University of Melbourne.

His work has shaped the planning discipline, particularly in the areas of urban policy and systems thinking in planning, and he continues to be regarded as a pioneering figure in the field.
