About the Author
Sunil Gangopadhyay was born on 7th September 1934 in Faridpur, Bangladesh, and grew up in Kolkata, India, where he pursued his education at Calcutta University, earning a Master's degree in Bengali. Initially, he began his career as a tutor and later went on to work in various fields, including the insurance sector, UNESCO’s adult education programs, and as an editorial head for a now-defunct daily newspaper.
Although he initially achieved fame as a poet, he is most widely recognized for his novels and contributions to Bengali fiction. His first novel, "Atmaprakash", was published in the Shardia Desh magazine, marking the beginning of his long and illustrious career. Over the years, his works, including "Eka O Kichu Jon", "Prithibir Pokkhe", "Raktokorobi", and many others, have captured the imaginations of millions of readers.
Awards & Recognition:
He was the recipient of many prestigious awards, including the Ananda Puraskar and the Bunkim Puraskar, and he was honored posthumously for his monumental contributions to Bengali literature. Sunil Gangopadhyay's pen name was Neel Lohit, and he also wrote under the pseudonyms Sanatan Pathak and Neel Upadhyay. His novels continue to be celebrated for their narrative depth and emotional resonance.
Death: Sunil Gangopadhyay passed away on 23rd October, 2012, but his literary legacy continues to live on through his timeless works.
