Born on November 2, 1935, in the Vikrampur region of Dhaka District, Shirshendu Mukhopadhyay's childhood was marked by a nomadic lifestyle, as his father worked in the Indian Railways. His early life was spent in various parts of India, including Bihar, Assam, and Bengal, which influenced his writing. He completed his education in Kolkata and later pursued a career in journalism, notably with Anandabazar Patrika. His debut novel, Ghunpoka, and his work in children's literature earned him recognition, including the Vidyasagar Award in 1985 and the Sahitya Akademi Award in 1989 for his novel Manabjamina.
