About the Book

The Rape of the Lock is a mock-heroic narrative poem written by Alexander Pope. First published anonymously in 1712, it is one of the most renowned examples of high burlesque. Initially appearing in two cantos (334 lines), it was later revised and expanded into a five-canto version (794 lines) in 1714, which was accompanied by six engravings. Pope’s satirical take on the trivialities of high society was a great success, with more than three thousand copies sold in the first four days. The poem culminated in its final form in 1717, which included Clarissa’s speech on good humor. The Rape of the Lock became hugely influential in popularizing the mock-heroic genre in Europe and remains a witty and insightful commentary on vanity and social norms.
