Author's Bio
Narayan Gangopadhyay (নারায়ণ গঙ্গোপাধ্যায়) was born in 1325 Bengali year in Baladhingi, Dinajpur, Bangladesh, with his ancestral roots in Barisal, Bangladesh. He spent his childhood in Dinajpur, along the banks of the Atrai River, and completed his college life in Faridpur, where he excelled in Bengali literature, securing first-class honors in his M.A.
Though his real name was Taraknath, he became widely known by his pen name Narayan Gangopadhyay and began his literary career under that name. He initially taught at Kolkata’s City College and later at Calcutta University. He earned a D.Litt. by researching short stories and became widely respected in Bengali literature.
Narayan Gangopadhyay began his writing career with poetry, initially contributing to Maspoyla magazine. His first short story was Nishither Maya (নিশীথের মায়া), and his debut novel was Timir Tirtha (তিমিরতীর্থ). His works spanned several genres, including short stories, novels, plays, and even film screenplays. He was also a renowned critic and journalist. Later in life, he gained immense popularity writing humorous articles under the pen name Sunanda in the Desh magazine.
Gangopadhyay was posthumously honored with the Sarojini Basu Gold Medal by Kolkata University for his immense contribution to literature. He passed away on the 22nd of Kartik, 1377 Bengali year.
