Author's Bio
Satyajit Ray (সত্যজিৎ রায়) was born on 2 May 1921 in North Kolkata. He was the only child of Sukumar Ray, a renowned poet and author, and Suprabha Ray. Ray's early education was at Ballygunge Government High School, and he graduated with honors from Presidency College in 1940. Later, he studied at Santiniketan's Kala Bhavana but left the institution in 1942 to pursue a career in advertising.
In 1955, his first feature film, Pather Panchali, was released, which won international acclaim, including the prestigious Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival. Over his illustrious career, Ray directed several iconic films, including Charulata, Apu Trilogy, and Goopy Gyne Bagha Byne.
Ray’s literary contributions are also significant. His first published story, Abstraction, appeared in 1941. His famous character, Feluda, made his debut in 1965 with the short story Feludar Goendagiri (Feluda's Detective Work). Ray wrote over 60 books, ranging from science fiction, detective stories, novels, essays, and screenplays. His work received numerous prestigious honors, including the Bharat Ratna (India’s highest civilian award), the Legion of Honor (France), and a special Oscar for Lifetime Achievement.
Satyajit Ray passed away on 23 April 1992, leaving behind a legacy of timeless contributions to cinema and literature.
