Synopsis:
The birth of two independent nations in 1947 marked not just a political division but a deep wound in humanity. Millions were forced to leave their motherland, and the introduction of the Enemy Property Act in Pakistan further intensified this inhumane reality. Against this backdrop, Selina Hossain crafts her powerful novel, Sonali Dumur.
The protagonist, Madhurilata, survived the horrors of the 1946 riots, escaping from a blood-soaked massacre that took her loved ones. But she refuses to be a defeated soul. She finds love and companionship in Animesh, a bond that strengthens when she declares at her grandmother’s cremation that only Animesh will perform the final rites.
Their love leads to marriage, but soon they witness the government seizing Dr. Manmathanath Nandi’s house under the Enemy Property Act. The house is plundered, leaving its walls echoing with the pleas of the homeless—“Doctor Babu, please come back.” Through the tumultuous lives of its characters, Sonali Dumur captures a vivid and painful period of history, making the past feel alive in its pages.
