About the Book
This compelling volume edited by Jochen Roose and Hella Dietz brings together a rich intersection of social movement research and classical to contemporary social theories. Social Movements and Social Theory explores how leading sociological thinkers—such as Michel Foucault, Pierre Bourdieu, Niklas Luhmann, Jeffrey Alexander, and Judith Butler—alongside frameworks like rational choice theory, relational sociology, and organizational neo-institutionalism, provide new insights into the study of social movements.
The book poses two central questions: What can social movement studies gain from engaging with established social theories? And conversely, how can social theories evolve through the lens of social movement analysis? Through these dual inquiries, the volume offers a critical examination of discourse, power structures, rationality, systems theory, protest politics, and institutional dynamics. It is an essential read for scholars and students interested in understanding the theoretical dimensions and empirical applications in the study of contemporary social movements.
