About the Book
The history of tribal social movements in India is centuries old, deeply influencing the culture, traditions, and social structures of tribal communities. Initially, these movements were localized and reformative, focusing on changes in lifestyle and culture. However, with increased interaction with outside forces, the scope and intensity of these movements evolved.
In recent decades, tribal social movements have increasingly centered on dignity, honor, human rights, and ecological preservation. The role of electronic media and civil society organizations has amplified their reach, providing both local and global visibility. Many of these movements have successfully halted or altered developmental projects in tribal areas, compelling policymakers to reconsider models of development.
This book presents a comprehensive exploration of the nature, types, history, and outcomes of tribal social movements in both historical and contemporary contexts. It combines theoretical insights with field-based studies, examining issues like marginalization, forest rights, environmental struggles, resource conflicts, and Naxalite movements. It is an essential resource for sociologists, anthropologists, planners, policymakers, and researchers interested in tribal studies and social change.
