About the Book
This book has been written to mark the fiftieth anniversary of the foundation of the Communist Party in India and focuses on the life and contributions of Singaravelu, a pioneering figure in the communist movement of South India. Singaravelu served as the president of the first Communist Conference held at Kanpur in 1925 and is widely regarded as the father of communism in the southern region of the country. While researching references to Lenin in the Tamil press between 1917 and 1924, the authors uncovered significant material relating to Singaravelu’s political activities during that period. These findings revealed that his role in the early communist movement was far more extensive than previously known. Motivated by this discovery, the authors undertook a detailed effort to gather additional material in order to present a more comprehensive and accurate account of Singaravelu’s life and work. The book thus fills an important gap in the history of the Indian communist movement, especially in its southern context.
