About the Book

This volume of articles, translated from German, introduces the scholarly work of Gerhard Oberhammer, a leading indologist, to students of Indian Philosophy and Religion. It covers a range of topics related to Hindu religious traditions and philosophical concepts. Oberhammer raises profound questions about revelation, transcendence, salvation, and the structure of tradition in Hinduism, offering new insights into classical Hindu philosophy.

The book is divided into eight chapters, each exploring a different aspect of Hindu thought, including the manifestation of salvation, the experience of transcendence in the Nyaya school of philosophy, the use of mantra in yogic meditation, and the role of God in yoga. Oberhammer’s unique methodological approach and his focus on the transcendental experience provide fresh perspectives on age-old questions in Indian philosophy.

This work not only makes Oberhammer's research accessible to a wider audience but also engages in a dialogical approach between Hindu and Christian philosophies, encouraging cross-cultural understanding. The book concludes with an extensive bibliography of Oberhammer's writings and an index of Sanskrit terms and authors, further enhancing its academic value.
