About The Book
Social Stratification and Mobility by K.L. Sharma provides an insightful exploration of the essential themes and issues related to the conceptualization of social stratification and mobility. With a focus on critical concepts like equality, inequality, hierarchy, exclusion, poverty, and deprivation, the book offers clear explanations backed by empirical evidence. Though concise, it effectively incorporates major theories, approaches, and profiles of various systems of stratification and mobility.
The book delves into the systems of stratification, examining the roles of caste, class, status groups, power, gender, ethnicity, and race in shaping social structures. It also explores the evolving patterns of social stratification in India, especially through two important chapters: 'Caste System' and 'Emerging Patterns of Stratification.' These chapters discuss contemporary changes in the social structure of Indian society.
Additionally, the book covers key aspects of social mobility, distinguishing between open and closed systems of stratification, and provides a comprehensive view of the dimensions of social stratification. It is an essential resource for students and scholars of sociology, providing a well-rounded perspective on the changing dynamics of social hierarchies and mobility.
