About The Book

Social Stratification and Mobility by K.L. Sharma delves deeply into the core themes and issues surrounding the conceptualization of social stratification and mobility. The book provides clear conceptual explanations of key terms such as equality, inequality, hierarchy, exclusion, poverty, and deprivation, all supported by empirical examples. Despite its concise nature, the book covers major theories, approaches, and profiles of various systems of stratification and mobility.

The text presents a comprehensive view of the systems of stratification, addressing the roles of caste, class, status groups, power, gender, ethnicity, and race in shaping social hierarchies. Special focus is given to the caste system and emerging patterns of social stratification in India, providing insightful analyses of these social dynamics. The book offers readers a solid understanding of both historical and contemporary trends in social stratification, especially within the context of Indian society.

With its structured approach, the book explores the fundamental aspects of social mobility, examining both open and closed systems of stratification. It is an essential resource for students and scholars of sociology, social sciences, and those interested in understanding the complexities of social structures and mobility.
