- Sunil Gangopadhyay started his career as a tutor before gaining various experiences working in an insurance company, UNESCO's educational program, a government office, and serving as the editorial chief for a now-defunct daily newspaper.
- His first literary work began with poetry, and he went on to write novels, short stories, and children's literature. He was the founding editor of Krittibas magazine.
- His first novel was Atmaprakash, serialized in Sharodiya Desh magazine, and his first poetry collection was Eka Ebong Kichu Jon.
- He won the Ananda Puraskar and Bankim Puraskar (1983), and the Sahitya Akademi Award (1985).
- His pen names included Nil Lohit, Sanatan Pathak, and Nil Upadhyay.
