About the Author:
Sharadindu Bandyopadhyay (March 30, 1899 – September 22, 1970) was born in Jaunpur, Uttar Pradesh, but his roots were in North Kolkata. His early education took place in Munger and Kolkata, and he later went on to complete his law degree in Patna. Initially a poet, he began writing prose with short stories and novels. His literary career truly took off in 1929 when he decided to pursue writing as a full-time profession.
Sharadindu is best known for his historical fiction and detective stories, especially his work on the Byomkesh Bakshi series, which is a classic in Bengali literature. His historical novels, however, stand out for their ability to blend real events with fictional narratives in a way that both educates and entertains.
In addition to his literary pursuits, Sharadindu worked as a screenwriter in Bombay for several years (from 1938 to 1952), writing scripts for numerous films. He later left the film industry and settled in Pune, where he continued writing. His interest in astrology was also profound, and he sometimes wrote under the pseudonym Chandrahasa. He received several prestigious awards during his lifetime, including the Rabindra Award and Matilal Award.
Synopsis of the Book:
The Oitihasik Kahini Samagra is a collection of Sharadindu Bandyopadhyay’s historical short stories and novels. Just like his predecessor Bankim Chandra, Sharadindu brought history alive, but unlike Bankim's monumental historical epics, Sharadindu’s works are characterized by their storytelling flair. He turned historical events and figures into fascinating tales, infusing them with drama, emotion, and intrigue.
This collection is a treasure trove for readers who are interested in historical fiction, where past events are not merely recounted but are vividly brought to life through a blend of narrative skill and deep understanding of history. Some of his most famous works within this collection likely include stories set in ancient Bengal, dealing with rulers, revolutions, and historical events.
Oitihasik Kahini Samagra offers readers the chance to dive into a world of history that is both educational and entertaining, with characters and events from the past living on in Sharadindu’s masterful storytelling. The book is not only a must-have for lovers of historical fiction but also for anyone wanting to understand Bengali history through a creative lens.
