These journals provide a rare and vivid picture of 19th-century rural Bengal, including locations like Hanskhali, Tribeni, Bongaon, Petrapole, Jessore, and Krishnanagar. Alongside daily life, Machell’s accounts capture historical figures like the infamous bandit Bishe Dakait, Titu Mir, and the intellectual Young Bengal movement, as well as forgotten individuals from the indigo industry.
