About The Book
New Directions in Sociological Theory: Disputes, Discourses, and Orientations by Ajit Kumar Pandey breaks significant new ground in sociological theory by connecting major lines of social thought that have long been in need of reconciliation. Drawing on the works of positivists, sociologists of knowledge, the Frankfurt School, Marxists, ethnomethodologists, postmodernists, and cultural theorists, this book presents a diverse range of sociological perspectives that challenge traditional norms.
The book explores critical epistemological questions regarding the relationship between sociological theory and the object it seeks to address. It delves into the methods and theories in contemporary research, emphasizing how these reflect the movement through the sociological spectrum. Throughout the book, the authors critique the positivist tradition's focus on causality, highlighting its weaknesses and considering new insights from sociologists of knowledge and phenomenological perspectives.
This work also rethinks critical theory, especially in relation to subjects often neglected or misunderstood by traditional approaches. It covers a wide array of sociological theories, with a particular focus on gender and new social movements, while addressing current global concerns, such as the shortage of resources. The book is an essential read for anyone interested in advancing sociological theory and practice in contemporary contexts, fostering new dialogues and perspectives on sociological research.
