Bharat Muni's Natya Shastra has 1-36 chapters. Out of these chapters 1-3, 6, 7, 13-27, 35, 36 are called Kavyalakshanakhand and the remaining 4, 5, 8-12, 24-34 are Sangeet Lakshanakhand. The present book is Kavyalakshanakhand. The original Natya Shastra, its translation and 257 Karikas of Baroda edition have been given in interpolated form. The original Karikas have also been given in revised form at two or three places. Abhinavagupta's necessary comments have also been given in the commentary, although the translator does not agree with many of his beliefs. The Hindi translation has been done in standard Hindi. The long tradition of Natya Shastra till the 18th century is available in various books. It has been used at its appropriate place.

Authentic details of various new facts of Sanskrit literature that have emerged from the present study are also available here. The editor has been careful not to let the earlier establishments get overwhelmed by the later developments.
