About The Book
"মুকুট" is a significant historical short story and play by রবীন্দ্রনাথ ঠাকুর, first published in the renowned children's magazine বালক, edited by জ্ঞানদানন্দিনী দেবী, in the year ১২৯২ বঙ্গাব্দ (1885 CE). Written when the poet was just twenty-four, Mukut draws upon the ancient history of Tripura and offers a unique glimpse into Tagore’s early literary imagination.
To craft this narrative, Tagore corresponded directly with Maharaja Bir Chandra Manikya of Tripura, initiating a relationship that added layers of authenticity and cultural richness to the tale. While the story may appear simplistic to modern readers, its value as an educational tool for young minds is immense.
Tagore himself emphasized the importance of using anecdotes from biographies and history as effective teaching material for children. In line with this philosophy, Mukut was later adapted into a play in 1908, meant to be performed by students of the Brahmacharyashram, to instill virtues such as sacrifice, perseverance, righteousness, and truth.
This edition of Mukut brings together both the original story and its dramatic adaptation, making it a rare and valuable text for educators, students, and lovers of Bengali literature alike.
