About the Book
Mapping Leisure: Studies from Australia, Asia, and Africa is a comprehensive exploration of leisure across three continents—Australia, Asia, and Africa—highlighting the cultural practices, theoretical frameworks, and societal implications of leisure in diverse global contexts. The book takes a comparative approach, offering a deeper understanding of leisure practices in countries ranging from Australia and New Zealand to China, India, Indonesia, Iran, Israel, Japan, Korea, the Philippines, Turkey, and several African nations, including Morocco, Mozambique, Nigeria, and South Africa.
Each chapter provides a unique perspective on the evolution and significance of leisure in different regions, discussing how leisure is shaped by historical, cultural, and social forces. The volume examines how leisure practices have developed and transformed from pre-historic times to modern-day society, while also addressing the challenges faced by different societies, particularly those that have been colonized or are deeply work-centered.
This book serves as a valuable resource for those studying leisure, sociology, cultural studies, and global perspectives on social practices. It is ideal for students, researchers, and academics seeking a global and comparative view on the concept and practices of leisure. The diverse range of contributors enriches the content, offering insights into various cultures and the political, economic, and social implications of leisure in today's world.
