  • Author Background: Leela Majumdar (লীলা মজুমদার) was born on 26th February 1908 in Kolkata, at the house of her maternal uncle, Upendrakishore Raychowdhury. Her father, Promodaranjan Ray, was a writer and a member of the Indian Survey Department. Leela spent her childhood in Shillong and later moved to Kolkata in 1920. She completed her B.A. and M.A. in English, earning first-class honors. She briefly worked as a teacher before dedicating herself entirely to writing. She was also involved in radio production for a short time. Her first children's book was বদ্যিনাথের বাড়ি (Badyinath’s House), and her debut novel for adults was শ্রীমতী (Shrimati). Leela Majumdar was an integral part of the Sondesh magazine, serving as a joint editor for many years. She received numerous prestigious awards, including the Rabindra Puraskar, Ananda Puraskar, Leela Puraskar, and the Indian Children’s Literature Award. She passed away on 5th April 2007.
