About the Author:
Nirendranath Chakraborty (born 19 October 1924, Chandra village, Faridpur district) was a prominent Bengali poet, journalist, and editor. He received his early education at Bangabasi and Mitra School, followed by studies at Bangabasi and St. Paul's College. His career in journalism began with the daily ‘Pratyah’, and he later joined the Anandabazar Patrika in 1951, eventually becoming the editor of Anandamela and a senior editorial advisor for Anandabazar Patrika.
A poet from his childhood, Chakraborty has written extensively, including poetry, critical writings on poetry, novels, and travelogues. His famous work on language and style, "Bangla: Ki Likhen, Keno Likhen" (Bengali: What and Why to Write), is a hallmark of his literary expertise. Over his career, he has earned numerous prestigious awards, including:
- Ulto Rath Award (1958)
- Tarashankar Award (1973)
- Sahitya Akademi Award (1974)
- Ananda Award (1976)
He also served as the president of the West Bengal Bengali Akademi from 2004 to 2011 and was awarded the Sahitya Akademi Fellow status in 2016. Additionally, he received the Indira Gandhi Gold Medal from the Asiatic Society in 2015, and honorary doctorates (D.Litt.) from universities in Kolkata, Bardhaman, and Kalyani.
