About Kantha
Kantha embroidery is a Geographical Indication (GI) product of Bengal, epitomizing the creativity of women. Originating as embroidered quilts used to keep babies warm, Kantha has evolved into a highly regarded art form. The embroidery includes motifs, lines, and fields of colour on various textiles. Biswa Bangla has worked closely with thousands of craftswomen in Birbhum district to rejuvenate the Kantha stitch. The product has expanded to include silk, cotton textiles, and home furnishings. This has positively impacted the artisans’ lives, helping them invest in education, nutrition, health, and better sanitation.
