About Kantha

Kantha, a Geographical Indication (GI) product of Bengal, is a testament to women’s creativity and craftsmanship. Originally used as embroidered quilts to keep babies warm, Kantha has evolved over time into an art form that features beautiful embroidery with lines, colours, and motifs on various textiles.

Biswa Bangla has partnered with thousands of craftswomen in Birbhum district to reintroduce the Kantha stitch on silk and cotton textiles, as well as home furnishings. Through this collaboration, the artisans have gained increased income, confidence, and access to better education, nutrition, health, and sanitation.
