About the Book
Despite significant international initiatives such as the Earth Summit of 1992 and continued efforts to implement the Kyoto Protocol, human activities are still having a devastating impact on the global environment. This book tackles the pressing issues of global environmental risks, emphasizing the challenges in reversing unsustainable trends, halting ongoing destructive practices, and creating a sustainable future for the planet.
The book takes a deep dive into the nature of global environmental risks, discussing the capacity of knowledge systems to identify these risks and human society's ability to manage them. One of the core focuses is the vulnerability of people and places to environmental degradation, a key factor in understanding and addressing environmental risks.
Through multiple chapters, the authors explore global environmental risks at different scales, shedding light on their regional expressions. The volume offers a comprehensive exploration of these risks, pointing out that while global environmental futures seem uncertain, they are still within the realm of human agency and can be tackled through democratic, humanistic, and context-specific risk analysis and strategies.
