This is a story of a woman who has traveled far away from her motherland to a distant city in search of love and freedom. This story is about a Bengali girl, Neelanjana Mandal. She marries Kishanlal, who owns a restaurant, and comes to stay with him in Paris. She finds herself caged in Kishanlal's exclusive Paris apartment. She realizes that after marriage, she has become a mere puppet in Kishanlal's hands. She is no more than a servant to finish the chores and then at night to satisfy his lust.

She chokes with this realization. She is looking for change from this dull life of a prisoner. She meets Benoyar Dupont, a very handsome, fair, blue-eyed Frenchman. Neela falls in love with him. He introduces her to the streets, cafes, and art galleries of Paris. He opens a universe in front of Neela. She gets involved in him, and they come together. Slowly, she realizes that even Dupont is the same as her husband. He always gives preference to himself. He loves only himself and not her.

She gives a full stop to their relationship when she realizes that she has to keep her feelings aside while being with him. But this full stop unfolds a new beginning for her, a search for her own soul. This novel relates the struggle and efforts of a woman, her mindset in this male chauvinist society, while keeping herself alive.
