Description:
This volume is the fourth in the ongoing “Man and Forest” series, which focuses on the significance of indigenous knowledge of various tribal communities in managing forests and local resources sustainably. The book addresses the growing challenges posed by economic development, environmental hazards, and a declining resource base. Orissa's forests, which cover over 57,000 sq km (36.72% of the state's geographical area), are rich in minor forest produce (MFP), referred to as Essential Forest Produce (EFP) in the book. These include fodder, fuelwood, medicinal herbs, dyes, tannins, fibers, essential oils, edible fruits, seeds, and honey. Despite its vast economic potential, about three-fourths of this forest wealth remains underutilized by the tribal communities due to inaccessibility and exploitation by middlemen, traders, and moneylenders. Dr. Patnaik’s empirical study explores the reasons behind this underutilization and proposes measures to help tribals harness the potential of EFP, thereby strengthening their economy. The book is of interest to social anthropologists, environmental activists, foresters, development economists, and policy-makers.
