About the Book
The United Nations Conference on ‘Environment and Development’ held in Rio de Janeiro in 1992 and the World Summit on ‘Sustainable Development’ held at Johannesburg in 2002 highlighted the worsening state of the environment. These events made it clear that no citizen on Earth can afford to be unaware of environmental issues, and as such, environmental studies have become essential for students. However, in India, adequate attention to environmental studies has been lacking. Recognizing this, the Supreme Court of India instructed the University Grants Commission (UGC) to introduce a basic environmental course in all colleges, to be compulsorily implemented across the nation.
This book is designed in accordance with the UGC syllabus and is divided into eight informative units. It begins with an introduction to the multidisciplinary nature of environmental studies and explores topics such as natural resources, ecosystems, biodiversity conservation, environmental pollution, social issues and the environment, human population dynamics, and fieldwork. Throughout the book, Indian examples are used to provide contextual understanding of the environmental challenges faced in the country.
This book is an invaluable resource for students, teachers, and researchers in environmental studies, geography, and social science.
