About the Book
This comprehensive sociological study delves into the environmental movements in Odisha, with a focus on the tribal movement in the Kashipur block of Rayagada District. The author examines the tribal community's dependence on minor forest products and the extent to which their basic rights to traditional livelihoods are being eroded due to industrialization and development.
The movements discussed are primarily in opposition to the mining industry in the state, which has posed significant challenges to the local tribes' access to vital resources such as land, water, and forests—referred to as "jal, jamin, jangal." These resources form the foundation of their livelihoods. The developmental model pursued by independent India has led to conflicts between economic development and environmental conservation, with marginalized communities often bearing the brunt of these development projects.
The book highlights how these environmental movements have emerged as a defense of traditional rights and survival strategies. It further explores the responsibility of the state and the role of civil society in supporting such movements. This study provides valuable insights into the evolving relationship between development, environmental sustainability, and social justice in India.
