About the Author:

  • Satyajit Ray (2 May 1921 – 23 April 1992) was a legendary filmmaker, writer, and illustrator, widely regarded as one of the greatest filmmakers of the 20th century.
  • Born in Kolkata, Ray was the only child of Sukumari Ray and Suvro Ray. He completed his early education at Ballygunge Government High School and later graduated with honors in English from Presidency College in 1940.
  • Ray’s creative career started in advertising before he became one of the pioneers of Indian cinema. His debut film Pather Panchali (1955) won international acclaim and was awarded the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival.
  • Beyond his filmmaking career, Ray was also an accomplished writer and illustrator. His literary works include a wide range of genres such as science fiction, detective fiction, novels, essays, and short stories. He is best known for creating iconic characters like Feluda (the detective) and Professor Shanku (the scientist).
  • Ray’s writing career also began in the 1940s with his first English story Abstraction (1941) and later with stories in Sambad Patrika and Sandesh Magazine. He received numerous awards, including India's highest civilian honor, the Bharat Ratna, and Legion of Honor from France.
  • His book Professor Shanku (1965) and Feluda's Detective Series (1965) are iconic, and he remains celebrated for his contributions to both the cinematic world and literary heritage.
  • Ray passed away on 23 April 1992, but his legacy continues to influence filmmakers, writers, and artists worldwide.
