About the Book

Development and its Discontents is an insightful analysis of the development discourse in India, expanding the concept of development beyond mere economic growth to include holistic, socially equitable, ecologically sustainable, and inclusive progress. Subhash Sharma examines the role of both the Indian State and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) in addressing the various issues related to development, particularly in marginalized sections of society, such as tribals, the poor, and the disadvantaged. The book explores critical topics such as food security, water issues, poverty eradication, and the state of education, specifically focusing on the marginalized populations.

With a focus on the relationship between development and its negative impacts, this volume offers a deep reflection on the contradictions and challenges inherent in India's development model. Sharma’s long administrative experience and academic engagement with social issues shine through in his comprehensive exploration of these themes. This work provides a valuable resource for policymakers, researchers, and students in the field of development studies.
