Summary:
This book delves into the life and influence of Henry Louis Vivian Derozio, a pioneering figure of the Bengal Renaissance. While Raja Rammohan Roy's reformist efforts centered around rationalizing Hindu practices, Derozio championed pure rationalism and human welfare, leaving religion aside. As a teacher at Hindu College, his inspired group of students, later known as the Young Bengal movement, challenged the orthodox norms of Hindu society and devoted themselves to social reconstruction. Despite his early death, Derozio's legacy sparked the initial waves of Bengal's Renaissance, which would later gain momentum and reshape society. Born in Kolkata, Derozio identified deeply with India, leaving an indelible mark through his progressive ideals and reforms.
