About the Book
Crime is a critical area of study as it raises fundamental questions about civil liberties, the role of the state, and the complexities of human behaviour. Criminology, as a postgraduate subject, is steadily gaining popularity across universities in India, yet empirical research in this field remains scarce. This book addresses that gap by presenting comprehensive insights drawn largely from the author’s own empirical studies on diverse aspects of crime.
Covering both the traditionally prescribed topics for postgraduate studies and contemporary issues such as crimes against women, political crime, youth and crime, and the functioning of the police, the book adopts a sociological and holistic approach. While a sociological background can enhance understanding, it is not a prerequisite for engaging with the text.
Featuring the latest data on crimes and criminals, along with theoretical perspectives, the work is designed to serve as an authentic textbook for criminology students and a valuable reference for NGOs, legal professionals, civil administrators, and police training personnel. Its detailed treatment of subjects such as punishment, prisons, probation, parole, and victimology makes it an essential resource for understanding both the causes of crime and the functioning of the justice system.
