About the Book

Crime remains a pivotal area of academic inquiry as it confronts essential questions about civil liberties and the power of the state. Criminological studies not only deepen our understanding of crime but also provide valuable insights into human behaviour at large. While criminology is gaining prominence as a postgraduate discipline across Indian universities, empirical research in this domain is still limited.

This book addresses that gap, drawing extensively from the author’s own empirical studies on various aspects of crime. It includes both the conventional themes prescribed at the postgraduate level and significant contemporary topics such as crimes against women, political crime, youth and crime, and the role of the police. The text adopts a sociological orientation with a holistic approach, yet it does not require readers to have a prior sociological background.

Enriched with the most up-to-date data on crimes and criminals, along with theoretical perspectives, this work stands as an authoritative textbook for criminology students. It is equally valuable to NGOs, legal practitioners, civil administrators, and police training professionals seeking a deeper understanding of crime patterns, causes, and prevention strategies.
