About the Author:
Krishna Basu was a multifaceted personality, a prominent figure in Bengal's and India's social and political life. Born on December 26, 1930, in Dhaka, she was the daughter of Charuchandra Chowdhury, a distinguished scholar, and Chayadevi Chowdhurani. In December 1955, she married Shishir Kumar Basu, a renowned freedom fighter and pediatrician.
After completing her Master's in English Literature from Calcutta University, she taught for forty years at City College, Kolkata (South), where she also served as the principal for eight years. Later, she was elected to India’s Parliament three times, representing Jadavpur. She became a beloved figure in Bengali politics and a respected leader in Indian politics. From 1999 to 2004, she chaired the Standing Committee on External Affairs in the Parliament.
In addition to her political career, she was actively involved with the Netaji Research Bureau, founded by her husband. After Shishir Basu's passing in 2000, she served as the Chairperson of the Netaji Research Bureau until her death. She also served as the President of Institute of Child Health, Kolkata, a hospital founded by her husband. Krishna Basu passed away on February 22, 2020, in Kolkata.
