Book Description:
Battalar Chapa O Chabi challenges the popular perception of Battala books as mere lowbrow, cheap literature. Sukumar Sen examines the rich cultural contribution of Battala's printed works, particularly focusing on how they played a crucial role in the revival of folk literature and culture. Through this book, the author highlights the significant role of the printing press in reawakening and sustaining Bengali literature, and reveals that the printed books from Battala were far more sophisticated and culturally significant than commonly believed. The book also traces the history of illustrated books in Bengal and provides insights into the origins of modern Bengali art and the history of printing presses in the region. This edition includes additional content such as a translation of an English essay by the author and a catalog of printing presses in various parts of Bengal, making it a valuable resource for both researchers and readers interested in the cultural history of Bengal.
