About the Book

Ashutosh Smritikatha, written by Dineshchandra Sen, is not merely the authentic biography of one of the greatest intellects of the Indian Renaissance, Sir Ashutosh Mukhopadhyay. It is also a trustworthy chronicle of the development of Bengali language and culture. Although Ashutosh was a renowned mathematician, jurist, and educator, he was not a literary figure himself, but his role in the advancement of Bengali literature and language remains unforgettable. The establishment of Bengali and modern Indian language-literature studies at the University of Calcutta was his initiative. His 1924 collection of essays titled Rashtriya Sahitya (National Literature) reflects the pinnacle of his literary thought.

Beyond his legal, educational, and scientific accomplishments, this book also uncovers the personal and compassionate side of Ashutosh Mukhopadhyay—a man devoted to serving the country and driven by a spirit of philanthropy. Behind his seemingly stern exterior lay a gentle heart, which this work delicately reveals, offering a unique dimension to his character.

Dineshchandra Sen, one of Bengali literature’s most eminent researchers and writers, was born on November 3, 1866. His first work, Kumar Bhupendrasinha, was published in 1890. Among his most notable achievements are the essays Banga Bhasha O Sahitya (1896) and its English counterpart, History of Bengali Language and Literature (1911). From 1909 to 1932, he served as a researcher and professor at the University of Calcutta. His other significant works include The Vaishnava Literature of Medieval Bengal (1907), Chaitanya and His Companions (1917), The Folk Literature of Bengal (1920), and The Bengali Ramayana (1920).

He also edited important collections such as Mymensingh Gitika (1923) and Banga Sahitya Parichay (1914). His notable contributions to Bengali cultural history include Brihat Bengal (Volumes 1 & 2, 1935). He authored novels like Tinbandhu (1904) and Aloke Andhare (1925), and penned several mythological stories, autobiographical works, and Radhakrishna themed tales.

Ashutosh Smritikatha offers a comprehensive and intimate portrait of this towering figure in Bengali history and culture, making it an invaluable addition to the libraries of scholars, students, and lovers of Bengali heritage.
