"I started storywriting in 1925. Over the next 12-13 years, I wrote stories whenever time permitted while I was teaching in a school. Today, as I go through the 13 stories included in this book, Ashru and Hasya, many thoughts are emerging. Most of these stories were written during my 15-year stay in Shiroda. Revisiting them brings back memories of the small village, its natural beauty, the atmosphere, and the villagers who unknowingly inspired my stories. Sweet and sour incidents from those days still have a special place in my heart. At this stage, I can even look back at my time as ‘The Khandekar’ with a neutral mind. The year 1925 marked the peak of Marathi short stories, and I was an active participant, but by 1940, this golden era of Marathi short stories had come to an end."
