Dr. M.D. Sampath
Dr. M.D. Sampath, born on 15th July 1941, is a distinguished scholar and epigraphist. He graduated and post-graduated from Madras University and earned his doctorate from Karnataka University in 1976. Dr. Sampath also holds Post Graduate Diplomas in Geography, Anthropology, and Sanskrit from Madras University. He served as an Epigraphist in various prestigious institutions, including the Department of Archaeology, Govt. of Madras, the French Institute of Indology, Pondicherry, University of Mysore, and the Archaeological Survey of India. He retired as the Director of Epigraphy at the Archaeological Survey of India.

Dr. Sampath has made significant contributions to epigraphy, archaeology, art and architecture, political history, socio-economic history, and religious history. He has authored numerous research papers and edited several important volumes such as Epigraphia Carnatica and South Indian Inscriptions. His work on Tamil and Kannada epigraphy is highly regarded. He also delivered the Prof. Balakrishna Nayar’s Endowment lectures at the University of Madras and was honored with the General Presidentship and a copper-plate citation in 2005 for his outstanding contributions to the field of epigraphy.

Additionally, Dr. Sampath has created software for various Indian scripts using modern techniques and edited several Felicitation volumes. He has presided over various academic sessions, including the medieval history session of the Andhra History Congress. His research and editorial work continue to influence the field of epigraphy and ancient Indian studies.
