About the Author

Dilipkumar Ray was born on January 22, 1897, to Kartikeya Chandra Ray, and Surbala Devi. His father was the famous poet, playwright, composer, and lyricist Dwijendralal Ray. Ray’s early life was marked by tragedy, losing his mother when he was only six. Raised by his father, Dilipkumar went on to achieve academic excellence, securing the 21st position in the Matriculation exam and graduating in Mathematics from Presidency College in 1918.

In 1919, he went to Cambridge University for further studies and later trained in classical music across Europe. His exposure to music, philosophy, and literature during his travels enriched his writing, which often dealt with spiritual themes, mysticism, and the unexplained. Ray also wrote several books on spirituality and classical music, and contributed greatly to the field of high classical music in India.

In 1928, he joined Sri Aurobindo’s Ashram in Puducherry, where he remained for many years, deeply immersed in spiritual practices. After Sri Aurobindo’s passing, Ray continued his spiritual work, traveling extensively and delivering lectures on Indian classical music.

Dilipkumar Ray had close connections with several influential figures, including his childhood friend Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose and Jawaharlal Nehru. Ray passed away on January 6, 1980, leaving behind a rich legacy of literature and music that continues to influence readers and artists alike.
