About the Book:
This essential volume offers a comprehensive examination of ageism and elder abuse, two interrelated social issues affecting elderly populations across both developed and developing nations. Through 26 insightful research papers, the book explores how society’s prejudice against older adults—manifested in stereotypes, lack of representation in media, and discriminatory language—fosters an environment conducive to abuse and neglect.
The forms of elder abuse documented include verbal, psychological, emotional, financial, and physical mistreatment—often inflicted by those closest to the victims. This abuse not only inflicts harm but also isolates older adults, leaving them feeling like “prisoners in their own homes.” Drawing from diverse contexts, the book provides an international perspective that highlights common patterns while addressing culturally specific challenges.
Ideal for psychologists, sociologists, social workers, policy makers, and gerontologists, this reader-friendly collection equips professionals with the tools to better understand and combat ageism and elder abuse. It serves as a vital resource for developing responsive strategies and building a more inclusive, respectful environment for the elderly.
