Product Description
In this thought-provoking book, Gary Browning explores the theory and interpretation of political thought through the lenses of key political philosophers such as Machiavelli, Hobbes, Locke, Rousseau, Kant, and more. Browning delves into the methods of interpretation employed by thinkers like Hegel, Marx, Foucault, and Derrida, using their approaches to gain deeper insights into modern political theory. He challenges readers to not only understand the content of past political theories but to interpret the historical and social contexts in which they were formed.
By discussing the complexities of interpreting these political theories, this book provides a rich and scholarly exploration of the history of modern political thought. It offers an innovative approach to reading past political texts and sheds light on what it means to engage in political thinking today.
Review
“This densely layered and intricate study combines modes of interpreting political thought with discussion of major political thinkers from Machiavelli through J. S. Mill and Nietzsche... Highly recommended.” — CHOICE
“Browning’s A History of Modern Political Thought is likely to become something of a landmark. It offers a new approach to the study of modern political thought and will no doubt form a main text on many university courses.” — Nick Hewlett, University of Warwick, The European Legacy
