About the Book
This book explores the effects of mass education, international migration, and virtuous growth on human development in the South Indian state of Kerala. The study is rooted in the Kerala model of development, focusing on the impact of education, migration, and regional diversity, particularly in the district of Malappuram, which has the highest number of international migrants in the state. The book argues that local-specific capabilities, rather than regional human development indices, should be considered when analyzing development.
K. Jafar highlights the importance of geography, migration patterns, cultural composition, and history of development in understanding how each region adheres to broader development models. The findings emphasize how factors like geography, education, migration, gender, and culture influence freedoms and opportunities. The author uses Malappuram's experience as a case study to examine education-led development in Kerala and provides valuable insights into the relationship between education and development.
