About the Book
India’s urbanization is unfolding at a pace that contrasts sharply with the slowing urban growth in more developed regions. With the urban population surging to nearly 400 million, the book explores the challenges and opportunities presented by this rapid urban growth. India has been grappling with a sustained rise in population for the past seven decades, resulting in an immense urban population and contributing to imbalances in development across regions.
While large metropolises dominate the urban landscape, the expansion of infrastructure and the industrial sector have lagged behind, exacerbating issues like unemployment, slums, poor living conditions, crime, and poverty. The urban transformation in India is still ongoing, and this book covers multifaceted dimensions of urbanization, offering fresh debates on the topic. It highlights the growing regional imbalances, the deterioration of life quality in major cities, and the urgent need for improved urban planning and policy to address these challenges.
