About the Book
This anthropological study provides a comprehensive exploration of the indigenous religion of the Tanghkul Naga tribe of Manipur, Northeast India. The book traces the history of the Tanghkul Nagas’ traditional religion, known as Hao, detailing its rituals, festivals, customs, and practices. It further explores the transformative impact of Western missionary activities and the introduction of Christianity on the tribe's spiritual life.
The study focuses on the continuity and change within the religious institution, examining the shift from traditional Hao practices to Christian beliefs. The book also delves into the ongoing cultural renaissance within the community, where conscious efforts are being made to revive their nearly forgotten traditions and cultural practices. Through this work, Rimai Joy examines how indigenous religions adapt and transform when confronted with external influences while preserving core elements of their traditional beliefs.
