Book Description:
As customary, Shiva leaves for the seasonal sugarcane cutting job but does not return home as always. Stung by a poisonous snake, Shiva dies in the field, leaving his parents Dagadu and Kalsubai, his wife Bhiku, and three children, the youngest being an infant. His parents start cursing the infant daughter, blaming her for Shiva's death. To support her family, Bhiku steps into Shiva's shoes and travels to Khurdawadi with her infant daughter, where she meets Bhumi, a learned woman who runs a school for the children of sugarcane cutters. Bhumi notices Dagadu's hatred toward the infant and decides to care for her, naming the child Gauri. When the sugarcane season ends, Dagadu refuses to take Gauri back. Bhumi becomes her guardian.
After returning to her native place, Bhiku cannot survive without her daughter and threatens her in-laws to bring Gauri back. Meanwhile, Bhumi has developed motherly love for the child and fears Bhiku will demand her back. Will Bhumi be able to return the child to her real mother? Tod is an emotional tale that sheds light on the life of sugarcane cutters.
