About the Book

The Dharma is the first comprehensive English collection of teachings by Kalu Rinpoche, a revered master of the Tibetan Buddhist tradition. Compiled from his teachings in America, this book is tailored for Western audiences and offers profound clarity on the foundational principles of Hinayana, Mahayana, and Vajrayana Buddhism.

Rinpoche's instruction covers both theoretical and practical dimensions of Buddhist practice, ranging from subtle psychological insights to the meditative disciplines of advanced practitioners. Newcomers to Buddhism will appreciate the accessible language and foundational explanations, while seasoned readers will uncover deep, rare insights drawn from Karma and Shangpa Kagyu lineages.

Key Highlights:

  • Comprehensive Buddhist Overview
Covers the full spectrum of Buddhist traditions—Hinayana, Mahayana, Vajrayana—with clear teachings on ethics, meditation, and wisdom.

  • Edited from Live Teachings
These teachings, originally delivered orally in 1982 at Kagyu Thubten Chöling (New York), retain their spontaneous and oral character, now edited for greater clarity.

  • Teachings on the Five Skandhas
Includes Lama Norlha’s unique exposition blending academic clarity with meditative instruction—an essential component for deep practice.

  • Compassion at the Core
The title reflects the ultimate goal of Buddhist practice: to benefit all sentient beings without exception. Compassion, according to Rinpoche, is the highest siddhi (spiritual accomplishment).

About the Author

Kalu Rinpoche (1905–1989) was born in Eastern Tibet and trained in both monastic and solitary retreat environments. A recognized tulku (reincarnated master) and holder of the Karma Kagyu and Shangpa Kagyu lineages, he lived 12 years in solitary retreat before becoming one of the most important emissaries of Tibetan Buddhism to the West.

He founded Dharma and retreat centers across India, Bhutan, Europe, and North America, making advanced teachings and practices accessible to a global audience. He was acknowledged as the activity emanation of Jamgon Kongtrul Lodro Taye, a key figure in the Rimé (non-sectarian) movement in Tibet.
