About the Book
This book critically examines Udayanācārya’s claim within the Navya-Nyāya framework, proposing that empty terms lacking real-world referents should not be considered genuine, thus rendering sentences containing these terms meaningless. However, the book challenges this view by suggesting that such terms may still possess meaning as they refer to intentional objects in the user’s mind. It also explores alternative perspectives asserting the meaningfulness of these terms without requiring corresponding entities. The work proposes the concept of "semantical object"—a term that may refer to imagined, fictional, possible, abstract, or even logically contradictory entities. The exploration includes the roles of lakṣaṇā (secondary meaning) and tātparya (intentionality) in understanding these expressions.
