About the Book

This extensive volume explores the intricate relationship between natural resource management, sustainable development, and governance, offering a comprehensive and multidisciplinary approach through a range of case studies from India and beyond. Drawing upon the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) framework, the book provides insightful perspectives into real-world challenges and solutions across diverse sectors including disaster risk reduction, ecological conservation, conflict resolution, climate change adaptation, citizen engagement, and capacity building.

With contributions from leading academics and experts, this book unpacks the theoretical foundations of resource governance and dives into practical experiences from regions like the Eastern Ghats, Kosi Basin, Brahmaputra Valley, and the Western Himalayas. Through these detailed studies, the volume illustrates how governance models can facilitate the implementation of sustainable practices to enhance resilience and livelihood security, especially among economically stressed and resource-deprived communities.

Structured across seven parts—from conceptual foundations and problem unpacking to future directions—the book covers topics such as land use dynamics, water governance, environmental degradation, agricultural sustainability, solid waste management, ecotourism, and climate change modeling. The diverse geographical scope and thematic range make it a valuable reference for understanding how localized practices intersect with global sustainability goals.

Serving as a critical resource for graduate students, academics, policymakers, planners, and nonprofit organizations, this volume not only offers a solid academic foundation but also practical strategies for sustainable development through inclusive and responsive governance frameworks.
