About the Book

Since its first performance in Athens in the 420s BC, Oedipus the King has been celebrated as one of the greatest tragedies of Sophocles and a cornerstone of Western drama. Widely regarded as a masterpiece, it became a model for dramatic structure, particularly after being analyzed by Aristotle in his Poetics. Its themes of fate, free will, and the tragic consequences of truth have influenced countless generations, making it a fundamental text for both theatre enthusiasts and scholars.

The play tells the story of Oedipus, the Theban king, who relentlessly seeks the truth, only to uncover the horrific revelation that he has killed his father and married his mother. This timeless tale has been interpreted in various ways over the centuries, most notably by Sigmund Freud, who drew on its themes to develop his theory of the Oedipus complex.

This translation by Don Taylor, both accurate and poetic, was originally created for a 1986 BBC TV production of the Theban Plays, which Taylor also directed. The translation brings a fresh and accessible interpretation to this ancient text. The edition is complemented with insightful commentary and notes by Angie Varakis, adding depth and context to the work for modern readers.
